Red Light Denim
According to the House of Denim Foundation the denim industry can and must become cleaner, drier and smarter. It developed Red Light Denim to prove its point.
This denim is made up of 18% post consumer recycled cotton, made from jeans that have been worn in Amsterdam. Trousers that were deposited in the city's recycling containers (Kici, now Sympany) were given a new lease of life as Red Light Denim. New products can be made with this denim. Post consumer recycling is the future for the clothing (and denim) industry, according to the Red Light Denim team.
- Waste is re-used, so that we need fewer natural products such as cotton.
- Recycling means saving water and less use of chemicals and pesticides.
Compared with 'normal' jeans, a pair made with Red Light Denim saves 600 litres of water. That's not enough by a long chalk, but it's a start - towards a brighter blue!
